Applications are invited from organised and highly-motivated graduates to provide support for library and archive services at the British School at Athens (BSA) for 10 months in the academic year (October 2026 -July 2027).
The Library & Archive Assistant Apprenticeship provides individuals, with an existing interest in the field, the opportunity to gain 10 months of funded, hands-on experience within the sector. During this period, apprenticeship holders receive structured training across a range of professional library and archive tasks. The experience is designed to help individuals determine whether they wish to pursue a career in the field. It provides a useful foundation for application to postgraduate courses in the information professions and a pathway into the sector.
The successful applicant will:
have graduated from a UK HEI with at least an undergraduate degree in a subject concerned with the mission statement of the BSA.
be fluent in English
be able to or willing to learn how to transcribe Greek and other languages of scholarship.
have good oral and written communication skills
Be highly motivated and enthusiastic with excellent interpersonal and organisational skills
have the ability to multitask and work independently and in teams
work to a high level of accuracy
have an interest in the scholarly work conducted and facilitated by the BSA
demonstrate an interest in pursuing a career in the archives and/or library profession
About the Role
To contribute to the smooth running of the library, including providing reader services, handling enquiries and preparing material for shelving.
To assist with classifying new books and adding relevant data to the catalogue database.
To assist in a variety of archive tasks including inventorying and cataloguing collections to ISAD (G) standards; rehousing and in-house conservation of archival materials; organizing items for digitization or scanning in-house where appropriate.
To curate digital catalogue information to ISAD (G) standards in to the Collection Management Software (EMU, Electronic Museum Management System-Axiell ALM).
To contribute towards the promotion of BSA collections, helping to produce blogposts or content for BSA social media and newsletters.
*During the tenure of the award, the apprenticeship holder is expected to be resident at the BSA Hostel in Athens.
