Attic Inscriptions Online Fellowship
-
Description
-
Nature of the fellowship:
1. The primary duty of the fellow will be writing, encoding, and publishing a new set of AIO entries proposed by the applicant with the agreement of the AIO Editorial Committee.
2. The proposal should include epigraphical documentation in any of the following areas: the Attic tribes, phratries, gene, groups of orgeones, military units, other associations. It may additionally include inscriptions unrelated to these areas. It should include revision of the inscriptions of the relevant type of group already on the site. The scale of the proposed project should be commensurate with the length of the fellowship.
3. The fellowship shall be tenable for a maximum of 90 days, either continuously or in separate chunks (e.g. 45 days x 2). It is envisaged that it will be taken up between the date of the fellow’s selection and the end of 2026.
4. The fellowship is not designed to support a significant amount of autopsy, but may be used to check select readings of inscriptions in museums in Athens and Attica.
5. The fellow will have the opportunity to deliver a public seminar at the BSA on a topic of their choice, if they so wish.
6. Applicants should submit a CV and a proposal of not more than 300 words outlining the set of entries that they propose to work on and the period or periods during which they would propose to take up the fellowship (see points 3 below on "Benefits" and 5 above).
7. Applicants should normally have completed or be in the advanced stages of a PhD including a significant Greek epigraphic component, and will preferably have prior experience of AIO style, norms and workflows.
8. Applicants are not required to have a pre-existing link with a UK university or other institution of higher education.
9. The selection committee should consist of the Editorial Committee of AIO (currently Chris de Lisle, Peter Liddel, Polly Low), Stephen Lambert (as founder of AIO and Advisory Board member) or nominated representative, and the Director of the BSA or nominated representative.
10. In the absence of suitably qualified applicants, the selection committee may elect not to appoint a fellow.
11. Chris de Lisle, as lead editor of AIO, will be the primary manager of the fellow’s work.
